This is a set of portraits taken by photographer and retoucher Felice Fawn for some personal work she did. It is set up in a studio, with a simple backdrop and bright studio lighting, creating no shadows on the face.the angle for each photo is straight on, which makes the photographs have a striking impact when you look at them. the use of gothic themed make up also makes the photo interesting, as well as the fact that the eyebrows hae been removed in photoshop, as it is not soething we would usually expect to see in a standard portrait. There has also been an exessive amount of retouching done in post production, as the the model’s skin is absolutely flawless and has surreal like quality to it. The links these Photographs have with my own work is that I plan to experiment in photoshop with retouching, in the style of Felice Fawn. When recently asked on her blog she said that she primarily uses the dodge and burn tools when retouching, so when starting my own work I will use these tools in photoshop in hope to create a similar effect. I persobally think both images are very intruiging because of their unusual qualities, the first more so than the next, as it looks more striking.

This is a photograph taken from Terry Richardson’s book on Lady Gaga, published in 2011. the composition of this photograph is interesting because of the technicalities. the angle at which it is shot at if from above, giving it a interesting view point, and the use of harsh flash works well as it reflects off of the water and metallic surfaces. what also makes the photograph interesting is that it is of icon, Lady Gaga, in a situation that we are perhaps not used to seeing her in, and you get a strong sense that Richardson has really captured the moment, with the water running and her expression and body language. This links with my current works as i am resarching Terry Richardson as a photographer, and I could use similar technical qualities in my own work, harsh flash for example. In one of my shoots I plan to recreate a similar shot as I think using a bathtub is an interesting an unique prop and the use of water makes a good photograph. I personal love this photograph, it show’s a more playful side to what we usually see of Lady Gaga, but the fact she is in the bath with a coture dress on makes the photo just as crazy as her.

this is my reconstruction of richardson’s image. To make them similar, I used a harsh flash so the photo has a bright exposure, and increased the contrast a little so the darker features contrast. I also retouched certain aras on the face so the skin looks as flawless as Richardson’s model’s.

examples of using different tyes of flash.

1 & 2, harsh flash- can wash out subject and make background too dark.

3, fill-in flash- right balance of flash exposed for background and subject so both can be seen properly.

stbrnsrf:

  • Direct flash - (harsh flash) usually on the camera, effective in circumstances where distinct colours and tones are about. Can give very saturated colours.
  • Fill-in flash - a technique which can be used with a flash gun, it is useful for taking photos when the sun is facing the camera, the subject may become dark or silhouetted while the background lighting may be fine. The camera is trying to adjust correct exposure here but it sometimes is incorrect for the subject. Fill-in flash brightens the subject close to you and makes the background bright and in most cases washed-out, but this all bring the subject on focus. Can also be used by bouncing off ceilings, walls, card, umbrellas, mirrors or tin foil.
  • Diffuse flash - where the light is scattered or bouncing off at all angles. This creates a soft look to the subject. Things such as a tissue, filters, card can aborbe but also reflect light.
